Wedding planner Kadeshia Bennett, of Essence Occasions, explains the first steps in your wedding planning process!

Congratulations on your engagement, it is time to celebrate! The hard part is over, all of the courting and batting your eyelashes has finally paid off and your partner has gotten down on one knee and proposed that you spend the rest of your lives together. You could loose yourself in your happiness for a while, celebrate with all of your loved ones and let it be known that you will soon be wed!

Once the celebrations of your engagement have begun to wane, you might begin to slowly think about planning your wedding. Ideas of tentative dates and places should be discussed with your partner along with what both parties preferences for a wedding might be; whether big or small, lavish or quaint you should both have a similar picture of what you both want for the day of your joining.

First, decide on what kind of theme your wedding will have. Will it be a romantic masquerade wedding, or a more casual and relaxed atmosphere? Also decide if the nature of your wedding ceremony will be traditional or non traditional? Decisions on wedding theme might be chosen by the time of the year your wedding will take place; for instance, a December wedding might have a more festive décor in accordance with the holidays. Wedding ceremonies may inevitably be decided by your religion or cultural background.

Next on your to do list should be your budget. First create a list of items and services that are needed for your wedding to be successful. Include everything; from transportation to favours. Remember to include your wedding planner into your budget. Your planner will ensure that you get the best possible services and products for the best prices as she will save you money through industry discounts. Your wedding planner will be your anchor and will relieve you from the stress of coordinating your busy wedding day. You want to be able to look back on this day and remember having the time of your life, instead of remembering how much stress you were under. You do not want to be the bride that says, “I wish I’d had some help” I have heard it too many times.

When deciding on your event venue use your wedding theme as your guide; this will make choosing the right place easier. Limit visiting potential places as you do not want to overwhelm yourself. Choose only three to five venues that match your vision, visiting more than five venues might get too complicated and you may confuse information. Also, take into consideration the distance between your ceremony and reception. If they are in separate places, try not to have a long travel time from one to the other.

When planning your wedding it all comes down to being prepared and leaving no detail unchecked. For every appointment that you attend, be ready with your list of questions. Contact their references and ask to see their work.  Do not overspend on your wedding. This is a celebration that you should not be paying for ten years down the road.
